Alonso Betancourt Cherbowsky is a Mexican filmmaker, writer, and producer born in Mexico City, Mexico, on November 9, 2004. His relationship with cinema began at the age of four, when he watched Woody Allen’s The Curse of the Jade Scorpion. That early fascination gradually became a passion for storytelling and directing. During his childhood and adolescence, Betancourt Cherbowsky continued discovering films and filmmakers that would influence his creative development. His interest in filmmaking grew considerably after watching Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) and Wim Wenders’ Paris, Texas. These films shaped his understanding of cinema and its ability to combine image, emotion, music, and unconventional storytelling. He began making audiovisual projects at a young age, initially working with friends and learning through experimentation. He learned writing, directing, editing, and production through practice, developing a preference for character, atmosphere, and psychological tension. One of his first productions was Pueden Los Patos Volar, a project created with his friends that became successful within his personal and creative community. The experience encouraged him to pursue filmmaking on a larger scale. Betancourt Cherbowsky later established CappuccinoCinema, an independent production company through which he has continued developing his work. His work explores morally complicated characters, obsession, violence, loneliness, identity, dark humor, and the unstable relationship between reality and perception. He is interested in character contradictions and the circumstances that lead people toward extreme decisions. His influences range across periods, genres, and filmmaking traditions. He is drawn to filmmakers who challenge conventional storytelling and explore surreal, psychologically intense, or emotionally ambiguous situations. His work combines elements of psychological drama, crime, thriller, dark comedy, and surrealism, with an emphasis on atmosphere and character. In 2026, Betancourt Cherbowsky is completing his first feature film, Abeja Voladora. The film follows Ramona, a reporter whose life takes a violent turn following a traumatic experience, and Detective Benjamín Flores, who becomes involved in the investigation surrounding a series of violent events while developing an unexpected relationship with her. Moving between crime, psychological drama, dark comedy, and thriller, Abeja Voladora explores revenge, obsession, morality, and the unpredictable ways in which people construct their own versions of reality. Produced through CappuccinoCinema as a Mexican-Canadian production, Abeja Voladora represents a significant step forward in Betancourt Cherbowsky’s career, expanding the scale of the work he began creating with his friends into his first feature-length film. The project reflects his interest in cinema that is unsettling, emotional, humorous, and visually distinctive. As he continues developing new projects, Betancourt Cherbowsky works across writing, directing and production, with the intention of building a personal cinematic language.
